MZ bike, Cuba

MZ bike, Cuba

I think these MZ bikes were imported to Cuba from East Germany in the late 1960's. This one was at a roadside food place where we bought the obligatory cheese toasties and shared a Buccanero beer before pressing on down the road. The owner seemed amazed that I was interested in his rundown old bike when we were driving a new-ish rented Skoda Fabia with air con. If I'd have handed him the camera he would probably have taken pics of the car, and that is probably sensible - someone surrounded by dilapidated stuff finds more interest in new and clean things. This makes me feel a little guilty for photographing things just because they are run-down or broken.

Re the bike - I had a quick look on the net and it seems that MZ ceased production a few years back, and the name is now owned by a Chinese firm. There is a worldwide scarcity of spare parts for them. Well, in Cuba there's been a scarcity of ALL parts for EVERYTHING for at least 40 years so if anyone wants to know how to keep a 40-year old bike going with no official spares get yourselves over to Cuba for a lesson in using old washing machine parts, coat hangers and cooking oil. I can heartily recommend the cheese sandwiches and beer. Thank me later.

28" (635mm) 36-hole Steel Box Rims at Flying Pigeon LA bike shop

This is the stuff our Deluxe Flying Pigeon bicycles are made of: steel box rims we had made and imported. 36-hole - so they can fit all the great modern front and rear hubs now available on the market. Steel - so they are strong (and shiny).

We sell these rims (just the rim, not built into a wheel) for $20/ea.

We also build all sorts of custom wheels for our Flying Pigeons and old roadsters.
